  1. RagingMoon1987 says:

Hidy, I want to state first off that I love your blog. It’s a good resource for some fairly obscure violent tornadoes, particularly the list of F5s. That must’ve taken a long time to research! There’s so little about some of those tornadoes on the web, particularly that incident at Inverness, Mississippi. So your list of F5 tornadoes is greatly appreciated.

Having looked over this particular post, I notice that on April 22, 1981 you have Delmo, Missouri listed as being struck by an F4 tornado. This same tornado struck the air base here in my hometown of Malden, Missouri, but for some strange reason the Tornado History Project’s map depicts the path as being north of Malden and missing the town altogether. In truth the north end of Malden got hit hard, and one man died. I sadly cannot verify this with words alone, but I do have newspapers to prove that it happened. Just thought I’d throw that out there. Again, thanks for the blog!

    • I don’t normally keep up with comments here anymore but I really appreciated yours. The history of these events fascinates me and I enjoy reading about the power of nature and I think it’s important to bring awareness to these events.

My format for this particular list wasn’t very scientific. I wanted to assign these tornadoes to a singular place that was most significantly impacted. That was often very hard to determine. I quickly realized, as you did, that the seemingly helpful maps on the Tornado History Project were very inaccurate. I think it’s fair to say that more than a few entries aren’t quite right. But it was a fun challenge nonetheless.

Thanks again for reading and sharing your story with me!
